Many people have concerns about putting their mouth on the mouth of a stranger. While it is understandable, studies have shown the risk of actually contracting anything is low. And in fact, chances are it will not be a stranger you will be resuscitating but a loved one, in which case this concern may not be so significant.
Ideally, you would have a specially designed mask handy for mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Some people actually do carry these masks with them, although most of us do not. If, for whatever reason, you or the other people giving the first aid are unable or unwilling to do the respirations (breaths), bear in mind the victim will still be better off with the chest compressions alone than with no first aid at all.
